October 2018 Newsletter

President's Corner

Shari Cassutt [email protected]  505-670-4982

Welcome to the 2018/19 Newcomers season! Thanks to all who attended and who helped at our sign-ups.  I loved looking around the room and seeing friends catching up on the latest news and all those smiles and hugs.

The biggest news (OK - besides the birth of my second grandson which is why I was on a plane Monday night while many of you were at the first session of sign-ups) is the unveiling of our new newsletter format.  Valerie has worked hard over the summer to make the newsletter more concise, inviting and informative. Only those activities with new information are on this page but if you want to read more about a group you can click on the link to our Activites page at the bottom of the newsletter. You will be redirected to our website. We'd love your feedback.

FALL POTLUCK!  New venue this year and new entertainment.  You should have received your invite in the mail by now. If not, please click here for the details: Potluck Invitation   I've seen the Sea Tea Improv group before. They were quick, clever and funny,  It should be a great night. Hope to see many of you there!

Annual Sign-up Event at Simsbury Library

Publicity - Dara Arends [email protected] 253-241-3391

What a great turn-out we had for Simsbury Newcomers Club’s annual registration and sign-ups! Our event at Simsbury Public Library last week brought in folks from several surrounding Farmington Valley towns. At last count we had more than 20 new memberships!

Thank you to everyone who made it possible and a BIG welcome to our newest members! Looking forward to seeing you all at our Fall-To-Table Potluck on October 13th at the Valley Freemasons building.

In other news our branding committee has been working hard to update our graphic look, including a new logo, color scheme and tagline. Stay tuned!

Paddle Tennis - Men
Steve Parker [email protected] 860-651-9445

Men’s Saturday Morning Paddle is a great way to start your weekend!  We play from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM.  You will be home in time to do all your Saturday chores and can feel good that you had some genuine beneficial exercise and fun. We have players of all ages and abilities.  Beginners are welcome and it is an easy game to learn.  We play on two courts and rotate players after each set of games. The number of days you are scheduled to play and the cost is based on the number of players signed up for the season.  Normally you’ll play 2 to 3 times a month.  Subs are available if you find out you have a conflict.  If you know what days you won’t be available we’ll figure those times in when we put together our schedule.

Questions?  Contact Steve Parker at (860)-651-9445 or [email protected].

Paddle Tennis - Couples
Camilla Thompson [email protected] 860-729-4806

Pinochle - Daytime and Evening!

Thanks to all those who stopped off to speak with us at the signup in September.  A number of people said they'd be interested in having a lesson to either learn the game or refresh their memory.  If you were unable to attend the signup sessions or now think you'd like to learn this fun card game, please get in touch with us to be part of a group lesson.  You can then decide if you'd like to play with one of the groups.  Judy Rabinowitz ([email protected]) is the contact for the evening Women's and Couple's games.  Sue Gannon ([email protected]) is point for the new daytime Women's and Couple's games .  We look forward to hearing from you.

Wine & Women

Cheryl Sojkowski [email protected] 860-658-2199
Sarah Nanzig [email protected] 860-651-9085

It was great to see so many of you at Sign-Ups in September. Looks like we have another great group this year filled with new and returning members. If you were not able to see us at Sign-Ups and would like to join us, please email Cheryl or Sarah with your name, telephone number, and email.

Wine & Women is a fun and casual group that meets once a month, at a member’s home, usually on the third Thursday night of the month. Everyone brings a bottle of wine or other beverage of choice and an appetizer or dessert to share. It’s fun to meet new members and reconnect with friends. We welcome members to join the group at any time during the year. And, of course, you don’t have to drink wine to enjoy an evening out with this lively crowd!

Our first gathering of the season will be held on Thursday, October 18th, 7:00 pm, at the home of Lisa Hugel. Please bring an appetizer or dessert, and a beverage to share with the group. You will receive a reminder email the week before the event with the location details and you can RSVP by replying to the email. Please RSVP to Cheryl by October 16th.

SAVE THESE DATES: November 29, January 17, February 21, March 21, April 25, May 16, and June 7 (a Friday date for “Wine, Women and Guest”). Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to open their home to our group. We still need hostesses for January, February and June.
